Alright, settle in everyone! Chef here, and today we're making one of my favorite aperitivo cocktails: the Hugo Spritz. It's light, refreshing, subtly sweet, and bubbly – perfect for a warm afternoon. This recipe is simple, elegant, and guaranteed to impress. Let's get started!

Hugo Spritz Cocktail (Aperitivo Perfection)

Estimated Prep Time: 2 minutes (plus optional chilling time for ingredients) Serving Size: 1 cocktail

Ingredients:

  • 3 oz (90 ml) Prosecco: Aim for a dry or extra-dry Prosecco. Something crisp and not overly sweet is key.
  • 2 oz (60 ml) Elderflower Liqueur (St-Germain is a popular choice): Don't skimp on quality here. Good elderflower liqueur makes a huge difference.
  • 1 oz (30 ml) Soda Water (or Sparkling Water): To top it off with a refreshing fizz.
  • 6-8 Fresh Mint Leaves: Gently slapped to release their aromas.
  • 1-2 Lime or Lemon Wedges: For garnish and a hint of citrus.
  • Ice Cubes: Plenty of them!

Equipment:

  • Large Wine Glass (or Spritz Glass)
  • Jigger or Measuring Spoons
  • Muddler (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Glass: Fill a large wine glass (or a traditional Spritz glass) almost to the top with ice cubes. The more ice, the longer your drink will stay cool and bubbly.

  2. Add the Prosecco: Pour the Prosecco into the glass over the ice.

  3. Add the Elderflower Liqueur: Carefully measure and pour the elderflower liqueur into the glass.

  4. Add Mint: Gently slap the mint leaves between your palms to release their fragrance and flavor. Muddle VERY GENTLY at the bottom of the glass with a bar spoon to release the aromatics. Place the mint leaves into the glass. Don't over-muddle! You don't want to bruise the mint and make the drink bitter. We're just waking up the flavors.

  5. Top with Soda: Add a splash of soda water to fill the glass, leaving a little room at the top.

  6. Garnish: Garnish with a lime or lemon wedge. You can squeeze it in for extra citrus if you prefer.

  7. Gently Stir: Very gently stir the drink once or twice with a long spoon to combine the ingredients. Avoid over-stirring, as this will flatten the bubbles.

  8. Serve Immediately: Enjoy your refreshing Hugo Spritz!

  • Chill Your Ingredients: For the best and most refreshing experience, chill the Prosecco, elderflower liqueur, and soda water before mixing.
  • Adjust Sweetness: If you prefer a less sweet drink, you can reduce the amount of elderflower liqueur. Conversely, if you like it sweeter, add a little more.
  • Experiment with Garnishes: While lime or lemon is classic, you can also experiment with other garnishes, such as a slice of cucumber or a few fresh berries.
  • Make a Pitcher: To make a larger batch for a party, simply multiply the ingredient quantities by the number of servings you need. Prepare everything in a pitcher, adding the soda water just before serving to maintain the fizz.
